The school under construction

Durring the 2007-2008 school year, Calcium Primary School raised over $6000 to support the construction of a school in Domeabra, Ghana. Third Grade Teacher Donna Donohue spearheaded an effort to raise money and awareness about the needs of children in impoverished nations. We are excited to announce that the junior secondary school CPS has been supporting in Domeabra is currently under construction. The school will be completed over the summer so that students can start the school year in new, bright classrooms.
The new school will consist of four classrooms, as well as teacher accommodations and latrines. Once completed, the school will provide secondary education to more than 160 local students and nine qualifi ed teachers will work at the school.
Thanks to this school-building project, the parents in the community are starting to recognize the importance of education, and are now investing more in their children’s schooling. Parents are volunteering at the school-building site and are fundraising for the future maintenance of the school. Once the school is completed, parents and teachers will form a school committee to discuss the quality of education, isolate any problems and brainstorm solutions together. Ensuring that girls attend and remain in school will be a major focus for the school committee, a huge task in a region where girls’ education was not previously seen as important.
By working together as a community, the people of Domeabra are empowering themselves. Through active community participation, the community members are taking pride in and responsibility for the projects that benefit them all, ensuring the sustainability of our initiatives
