The
Indian River community is located in rural upstate
New York, where the main industry is agriculture. The population of
Jefferson County, home to the
Indian River community, is growing at a higher rate than the overall growth rate of
New York State. Our community consists of six villages (
Antwerp, Calcium, Evans Mills, Oxbow,
Philadelphia, and Theresa) as well as the townships of
Antwerp,
Philadelphia, and Theresa, and portions of the townships of
Alexandria, LeRay, Pamelia and Rossie.
Fort Drum, home to the United States Army’s 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), also comprises a significant portion of the district’s population and geography. The
Indian River area, known as the “land of lakes”, is home to a chain of picturesque inland lakes and rivers, and it is near the
St. Lawrence River, one of the primary shipping channels in the northeast. The small city of
Watertownlies to our south, and the northern portion of our community is approximately fourteen miles from the
Thousand Islands Bridge, a major route used to travel into
Canada. The combination of the strong roots of our largely rural area with the suburban flavor provided by
Fort Drum has created a rich melting pot of people with an incredible diversity of backgrounds and experiences.
Indian River is an exciting, ever changing, and developing community.
