We hope you are having a wonderful summer and that you are taking advantage of the many recreational resources we have in this area.  Our current newsletter contains many useful points of information as well as a calendar for the 2012-13 school year.

The Board of Education and I are pleased to inform you that Indian River Central School District is in good standing for all NYS School Report Card Accountability status and all school programs have been maintained.  In addition, Indian River’s 84% cohort graduation rate is well above the statewide 74% range.  If you add August graduates, we climb to 89.5% of students who started ninth grade in 2007 had graduated after four years.  Congratulations to everyone in the Indian River Community and we will continue to strive for a 100% graduation rate.

Schools across New York are aligning with the Regents Reform Agenda and federal Race to the Top shared vision, including goals of preparing all students for college and career readiness as reflected in the Board of Regents adoption of Common Core State Learning Standards.  The state’s new teacher and principal evaluation system is being negotiated with both the teachers and principals unions throughout New York’s 700 school districts and must be in place by January 2013.  Once established, school districts will evaluate teachers and principals using student achievement data.  Indian River is transitioning instruction and assessment to comply with all new regulations to help our students succeed and improve teacher training.

As the new school year approaches we will begin to see a stabilization of growth in our student population as a result of the Fort Drum expansion.  Our number one priority will be to provide excellent educational opportunities for all students to be successful, at a rate indicated by ability, in a safe and orderly environment free of harassment and bullying.  We have excellent teachers, staff, guidance personnel and administrators.  We also have excellent leadership through our Board of Education.

Once again, the Board of Education will travel to all of our schools to hold board meetings.  Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.  This is not only an opportunity for the Board to visit all eight school buildings, but also allows them to get feedback from community members.  To help facilitate communication, the Board has listed their e-mail addresses on the District’s web page.  We extend to everyone an invitation to visit our schools, and log onto our website at www.ircsd.org.

Thank you
