8th Grade Course Selections

8th Grade Scheduling

Students in 8th grade take a variety of different courses throughout the school year. Some classes meet every day all year, while some meet every day for half of the year, or even for a quarter of the year! Musical Ensembles such as Chorus, Orchestra and Band as well as Physical Education meet every other day for the entire school year. Below are a list of all the different courses offered in 8th grade!

40 Week/All Year Courses
Math 8
Science 8
English 8
Social Studies 8
Foreign Language: French I, German I, Latin I, Spanish I

Transfer students who enter past the first 5 weeks of school will only be placed in a Foreign Language if they were previously enrolled in one at their last school district.
If a student's IEP indicates that they are "Language Exempt", they will not be scheduled into a Foreign Language.

Advanced Courses in 8th Grade
(Available to students who successfully pass Advanced Math 7)
Algebra
Biology
Biology has a mandatory Biology lab which meets every other day all year.
Both courses culminate in a June NYS Regents Examination.
In order to be eligible for the Biology Regents, you must complete a minimum amount of lab time.

Art 8
Family & Consumer Science 8
Computers 8

Physical Education
(every other day for 40 weeks)
*Students are required to participate in swimming during 7/8 PE
Required swimming apparel: one piece swimsuit or swimming trunks that tie.

Musical Ensembles
Chorus, Band, Orchestra
(1st period, every other day for 40 weeks)
Students in Band and Orchestra are required to take instrumental lessons on a rotating 6 day basis.

8th Grade Course Selections

In February 2012, Ms. Castello visited 7th grade classrooms to present on 8th grade scheduling. A copy of the power point presentation can be found at the bottom of this page along with the Scheduling Packet that was mailed home to all students. Students were asked to complete and return this form, indicating their preference for a foreign language as well as whether they elected to participate in a musical ensemble. Schedule requests were mailed home with Quarter 3 report cards for students to verify that their selections were accurate.

Transfer students entering 8th grade will have the opportunity to elect to participate in music ensembles. New students entering after the first five weeks of school will only be scheduled into a foreign language provided they had been enrolled in one at their previous school.
