In addition to the four 8th grade core classes (English, Science, Math, Social Studies) students take within their teams, 8th grade students may also take courses in the following areas:


Foreign Language (LOTE)
8th grade students have the opportunity to select French, German, Latin or Spanish as their foreign language choice. Students who successfully pass both the course and the final proficiency exam will earn high school credit and have the opportunity to enter the second year of study during their freshmen year.
Some students may not be enrolled in a foreign language based on a language exemption on their IEP. Additionally, new transfer students who enter Indian River past the 5 week mark who have not previously been enrolled in a foreign language, may not start a language until 9th grade.

Technology 8

8th grade students will participate in 20 weeks of Technology 8. Students will have the opportunity to study technology in various forms: Engineering, CAD (Computer Animation Drawing), Electronics, etc.

Family Consumer Science 8
This 10 week course will introduce students to textiles and sewing, money management, interpersonal communication and career exploration. All students will take a career interest inventory and explore their results as they begin dialoguing and planning for their futures as contributing members of society.

Art 8
Art 8 is a 10 week course which challenges students to utilize their creative talents as they are exposed to various art forms, art history, and differing fine art mediums.

Computer Science 8
Computer 8 is a 10 week course which provides students the opportunity to develop higher level computer skills. Students are exposed to a variety of technologies that stimulate creativity and innovation while fostering digital competence.

Music Ensembles
Chorus, Band and Orchestra practice every other day 1st period. 8th grade students are highly encouraged to continue in the music program at Indian River, although participation is optional.

Physical Education
Students participate in a mixed 7/8 grade Physical Education class every other day, all year. Various units in fitness and exercise are introduced throughout the year, including swimming. Appropriate PE apparel include socks, sneakers, shorts/wind pants, and a t shirt. During the swimming unit - students are required to wear either a one-piece bathing suit or swimming trunks that tie.

Academic Intervention Services (AIS)
Students who need improvement in Math and/or Literacy may be scheduled into either Math AIS and/or Reading Labs. Students may be scheduled based on their state assessment scores and/or by going through the RTI (Response to Intervention) Process.

ESOL

Students whose first language was a language other than English, may be scheduled to work with Ms. Tooley to help improve their understanding and use of the English Language.

Speech Services
Students may work with Mrs. Bell to improve upon areas of speech - social stories, difficulties in speech production, etc.
