NYS Math Common Core On January 10, 2011, NYS approved the Common Core as our guideline for curriculum. As part of the Race to the Top initiative, every state in the nation was given the opportunity to adopt this core set of standards, which are modeled after educational practices in nations that are higher than the USA in Math scores. To date, 44 of the 50 states have adopted the CC. This means that in 44 of our states, kids in the same grade level will be learning the same things. This will make the educational consistency for Indian River's transient students much better. The state has provided a timeline of 4 years for fully transitioning over to the Common Core. (Transitioning is to be completed by the school year 2014-15.)
