We Need Your Help!

Federal Impact Aid (federal funding) makes up over 20% of Indian River's anticipated funding for this year and is critical to our ability to provide the quality education we have come to expect. This funding is used to provide services to all Indian River students, not just military students. Please take the time to complete the Federal Impact Aid Survey in ParentSquare in a timely manner. This is always important, but in a year when funding is potentially declining, it becomes even more important. Please help us ensure we receive the support needed to maintain our incredible educational opportunities for students!

What to Know about Cold and Flu Season!

To our Indian River Parents and Guardians,

As we move into the colder months, we will begin to see an increase in respiratory illnesses such as common colds, influenza (flu), COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).  Our primary objective in the Health Services department is keeping our students, staff, and families healthy throughout the season.

Here are a few tips to help reduce the spread of illness:

    • Keep children home when they are sick. A fever, persistent cough, vomiting, or other infectious symptoms are signs they should stay home until feeling better.  Rest is a key part of recovery, and staying home helps prevent the spread of contagious illnesses.
    • Encourage good handwashing. Washing hands for at least 20 seconds is one of the best ways to prevent spreading germs.  Hand sanitizer works in a pinch, but nothing beats soap and water!
    • Cover coughs and sneezes. Teach children to use a tissue or their elbow, not their hands.
    • Clean high-touch surfaces regularly. Did you know that some viruses can live on surfaces for up to a week???  Door handles, toys, phones, and desks can all harbor germs, so frequent cleaning is a must!
    • Promote healthy habits. Getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, reducing negative stress and staying hydrated all support the immune system.
Vaccines can also help protect your family this season:
    • Flu vaccine: Recommended yearly for everyone 6 months and older.  For those with egg allergies, you're in luck!  This year's trivalent flu vaccine has been developed both with and without eggs.  This means that you can get the flu shot!  Talk to your healthcare provider about getting the right vaccine for your needs.
    • COVID-19 vaccine: Vaccines are available year-round for everyone 6 months and order.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends talking to your pediatrician to determine if the COVID-19 vaccine is right for your child.  Remember: COVID vaccines do not contain live viruses, so they cannot "give" you COVID.  However, as with any vaccine, you may experience a mild case of symptoms as your body identifies and builds immunity to it.
    • RSV vaccine: To prevent this respiratory virus, RSV vaccines are current available for specific populations---older adults, infants under 8 months of age, pregnant people, and some young children with high-risk conditions.  Talk with your healthcare provider to see if your child or family members are eligible.

By working together, we can help keep our school community healthy and limit the spread of illness this respiratory season.

If you have any questions about vaccines or when to keep your child home from school, please reach out to your school nurse or your healthcare provider.

Wishing you a safe and healthy "cold" season!

    Chelsea Kolb, MSN, FNP-C
    Director of School Health Services

A Message to the IRCSD Community: We're Here to Help!

    To the IRCSD Community,

The Indian River Central School District understands that our community, like many across the nation, is facing challenging economic times. We recognize that an increasing number of families are dealing with the significant burdens of food and housing insecurity. These difficulties are not just statistics; they affect the well-being and potential of the children and families we serve.

In these difficult times, we want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our community. Our mission has always been to support the whole student, and that support extends far beyond the classroom walls. We believe that for students to succeed and thrive, their basic needs must be met. We are—and will continue to be—a partner you can depend on.

We are proud to share the resources and programs we have in place to support our families. We want to ensure that every member of our community is aware of the help that is available:

    • Free School Meals for All Students: Continuing in the 2025-26 school year, through our participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)all students in the Indian River Central School District receive a free, nutritious breakfast and lunch every school day, regardless of household income. We strongly encourage all families to take advantage of this program, which ensures every student is fed and ready to learn. While no meal application is required, we kindly ask all families to complete the Economic Survey. This form is critical in helping the district secure continued State and Federal Aid that directly supports your child’s education.

    • Discreet Support for Weekends: We know that hunger doesn't take a break. Our Indian River Backpack Program is a not-for-profit initiative run within our district that discreetly provides students in need with nutritious, child-friendly food items to take home on weekends and school breaks. This helps the children return to school ready to learn. The Backpack Program holds various fundraising opportunities throughout the year, and many employees also choose to participate in payroll deductions to contribute to this critical resource. Community members, businesses, and organizations can also donate funds and food items to help support this important program.

    • Support for Housing Instability: We are deeply committed to providing a stable and supportive educational environment for all children, including those who may be experiencing housing insecurity. This can include families living in shelters, motels, or temporarily sharing a home with others due to economic hardship. Our district provides resources and support in accordance with the McKinney-Vento Act to ensure immediate school enrollment and stability for these students.

    • Community Partnerships: We are not in this alone. We work closely with wonderful community partners to help connect our families with additional food resources available right here in our community.

We are more than just a school district; we are One District, One Family, One Community, One Wolf Pack! It takes strong schools and strong partnerships to build a resilient community, and we are dedicated to being a source of support, stability, and hope.

If your family is struggling, please do not hesitate to reach out. We encourage you to contact your child's school counselor, social worker, or a building principal. Your conversation will be treated with confidentiality and compassion, and our team will work to connect you with the resources you need.

We are in this together, and together, we will ensure every member of our Indian River family is cared for.

    Sincerely,

    Troy Decker
    Superintendent of Schools
